I know how important it is to make the best food choices for our kids. Lately, I’ve been digging into the whole GMO (genetically modified organisms) debate, and I wanted to share what I found with other parents who are trying to figure this out too.
What Are GMOs Anyway?
GMOs are plants or animals that have had their DNA altered in a lab, usually to make them resist pests or survive harsh growing conditions. Here in North America, crops like soy, corn, canola, and sugar beets are commonly modified crops. These ingredients end up in a lot of processed foods.

Where Are GMOs Hiding in Kids’ Food?
I was shocked to find out just how many common foods contain GMO ingredients. In North America, over 90% of soy, corn, and canola crops are genetically modified, and these ingredients sneak into so many children’s foods:
Baby Formula: Many formulas use soy protein or corn syrup solids as key ingredients. Most soy and corn in North America are genetically modified creating formulas that contain these ingredients unless declared “organic” or “non-GMO.”
Toddler Snacks: Those puffs, crackers, and cereals we rely on for a quick snack for children often contain genetically modified corn starch, corn syrup, or soybean oil. Some “healthy” snack bars and fruit snacks can include GMO-based sweeteners or oils.
Frozen and Processed Foods: Quick meal options like frozen nuggets, pizzas, and flavoured yogurts may include GMO oils, additives, or flavourings. Popular packaged macaroni and cheese brands and even boxed mashed potatoes contain GMO ingredients. Some flavours are broadly labelled “natural or artificial flavour”, not specifying the exact ingredients used.
Fruits and Veggie Products: While fresh fruits and veggies are rarely GMO (except for some papayas, squash, and Arctic apples), processed items like juices, fruit snacks, and purees can sneak in GMO ingredients through added sweeteners, flavours, and thickeners.
Baked Goods and Breakfast Cereals: Many cereals and baked treats marketed to kids use corn-based sweeteners, GMO soy oil, or genetically modified wheat derivatives. Baked goods will most likely contain a GMO crop unless stated organic or non-GMO.
Are GMOs Safe for Kids?
This is the big question! From what I’ve read, organizations like the FDA, USDA, and Health Canada say GMOs are safe to eat. However, some experts argue that there aren’t enough long-term studies on how GMOs might affect kids as they grow.
There’s also some concern about GMOs potentially triggering new allergies due to the modification of DNA to create these crops. I get why parents are cautious and there are ways to avoid or limit GMOs (If That’s Your Choice). Things that help include sourcing labelled organic foods in the U.S. and Canada. Look for the trustworthy certification Non-GMO Project Label for GMO-free foods. Read Labels to avoid ingredients such as corn syrup, soy lecithin, and canola oil which are often GMO-based.
Conclusion
GMOs are increasing in our food supply, especially in processed snacks and meals for children. Current research remains vague due to the lack of long-term studies and the new DNA modification of these crops. One of the best ways to protect our young children is to stay informed.
